BOOK 1: DEATH’S DISCIPLE
In Whitby, a widow’s crumpled body is found lying in the hallway of her charming Victorian house. A scarf pulled so tightly around her neck that it’s cutting into her skin. Beside her lies a copy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The family had been celebrating her seventieth birthday and the only outsider is Charlotte Sanderson, who is crouching over the body. She also happens to be the girlfriend of the senior investigating officer, Detective Frank Miller . . .

BOOK 2: THE EVE OF MURDER
Georgina Callan is found dead in the same spot where her father jumped to his death years earlier. But Georgina didn’t take her own life — she was brutally strangled before she fell. She had been organising the Whitby literary festival. When it’s revealed one of the authors has received a slew of death threats, Miller suspects they were sent by Georgina’s killer. But their motive is a mystery. Can Miller unearth the murderer before the festival begins?

BOOK 3: BIDDING TO DIE
Keith Hill is bludgeoned to death in his hotel room. He’d listed what he thought were valuable Victorian letters on eBay and received just one bid. The bidder is Detective Miller’s only lead. But Miller’s attempts to contact him are halted by a shocking discovery — the bidder is also dead. And his death has been ruled a homicide. Someone thought the letters were worth killing for . . .

BOOK 4: BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW
On a bleak winter solstice, the Whitby townsfolk unite for the annual tree lighting ceremony. The next morning, local residentSamantha Thompson is found dead. Her body is lying in a graveyard with a crow carcass laid on her chest and inverted crosses carved into her feet. Miller had shared a few drinks with Samantha the night before and is suspended from duty. With his good name under threat he embarks on a covert investigation. Miller must crack the case to save his career.

BOOK 5: MURDER ON THE RECORD
Miller is investigating an unusual robbery. Nothing is missing — instead a vinyl record has been left at the scene. Later that evening he rushes to help a woman lying sprawled on the pavement, but he’s too late. The woman dies in his arms. The two mysteries collide when the town suffers seven more break-ins where vinyl records are left — and the cases of seven missing women come to light. Miller must act fast to decode the killer’s sinister messages before he strikes again.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Frank Miller is the youngest Chief in the force’s history. He eschewed the Graduate Training Scheme in favour of working his way up from the bottom — a status that can make him a little officious. His features are round, his hair — flopping despondently on his shoulders — dirty blonde, and his eyes bright blue.

THE SETTING
The coastal town of Whitby is split in two by the River Esk, which runs from the North Yorkshire Moors into the town’s harbour, where it joins the North Sea. This has created two sides to town, linked by a swing bridge. The new side is largely Victorian, glowing with visitor attractions. The old side is home to the cobbled alleyways and dark fog banks that give the town its ancient charm. There, at the top of 199 steps, are the foreboding Abbey ruins — their ghostly outline towering above the town.
